Part I
A Pharmaceutical Station
       1. Modern pharmacy is a medical organization which makes, stores and sells drugs. According to the Law pharmacy is one of the institutions of the health care system which main function is to provide the population with med-icines, sanitary and other health products. A pharmaceutical station is one of the types of pharmacies which sells ready-made drugs and other medical goods.
       2. A pharmaceutical station consists of a chemist’s department, special working rooms and administrative offices. The chemist’s department sells ready-made medicines, which are given out immediately at a patient's request. These drugs are manufactured at pharmaceutical plants.
       3. There is a trade-hall with a counter, show-cases and drug cabinets inside the pharmacy.
In the show-case with drugs people can see such dosage forms as pow-ders, pills, tablets, tinctures, ointments, drops, extractions, etc.
The glass show-case with things for medical care contains thermometers, hot water bottles, cotton-wool, bandages, mustard-plasters, syringes and so on.
There are all necessary things for babies in the special show-case with dummy teats, dosage bottles, pampers, tooth rings, etc.  
In the show-case with hygienic accessories clients can see tooth-paste, tooth-brushes, gels, creams, powders, soap, shampoo, conditioners and other specific things.
Also there is a special show-case containing dried herbs and berries, spe-cial teas and collections.
4. All the medicines are kept in the drug-cabinets and on the open shelves, so that a pharmacist could find the necessary drug very quickly, not to make the patient wait. The working place of a pharmacist is behind a counter. The drugs are kept according to their therapeutic effects: drugs for cough, for flu, drugs for headache, and cardiac, sedative, tonic medicines and so on.
5. As there are different medicines for one and the same disease, the task of a specialist is to advise a patient which medicine is more effective. Moreo-ver, the pharmacist working at the chemist’s department should help patients in choosing the medicine, explain how to take and to store it and inform about side-effects and contra-indications.

Part II
Antibiotics
1. In common usage, an antibiotic as came fr om the ancient Greek is a substance or compound that kills or inhibits the growth of bacteria. Antibiotics belong to the broader group of antimicrobial compounds used to treat infec-tions caused by microorganism, including fungi.
2. The term "antibiotic" was introduced by Selman Waksman in 1942 to describe any substance produced by a microorganism that is antagonistic to the growth of other microorganisms in high dilution.
3. With advances in medicinal chemistry, most antibiotics are now semi synthetic modified chemically fr om original compounds found in nature.
4. Antibiotics may be divided into two broad groups according to their effect on microorganisms: those that kill bacteria are bactericidal agents, while those that only impair bacterial growth are known as bacteriostatic agents.
5. Antibiotics are commonly classified on the basis of their mechanism of action, chemical structure or spectrum of activity.
6. Antibiotics may be used in tablets, intravenous solutions, sometimes are administered topically, as with eye drops or ointments. Although antibiot-ics are generally considered to be safe and well tolerated, they have been asso-ciated with a wide range of adverse effects.

IV. Перепишите предложения; подчеркните глагол-сказуемое и опре-делите его видовременную форму и залог; напишите форму инфини-тива. Предложения переведите.

V. Перепишите предложения, подчеркните глагол «to do» и определи-те, является ли он смысловым, вспомогательным или словом-заместителем.
Предложения переведите.
1. The students did all the best to pass examinations well.
2. We produced the necessary compound earlier than they did.
3. The properties of this substance do not make it possible to use it in this ex-periment.

VI. Выпишите предложения, где конструкции с глаголами «to have», «to be» выражают долженствование, предложения переведите.

VII. Перепишите предложения, подчеркните в каждом придаточное предложение; подчинительный союз или союзное слово обведите кружком; при бессоюзном подчинении укажите на место, где мог бы находиться опущенный союз. Предложения переведите. (См. образец 4).
1. When a language is studied systematically, it can be mastered in a year.
2. At the academy museum one can see original documents, books, articles of outstanding scientists which were published during their lives.
