It was the New Year's Eve, the night when people send their best wishes to each other and have great hopes for the coming future. Molly Farren had no hopes. Her only w ish now was to revenge herself on the man who made her unhappy for ever. She recalled the time when he* a rich man’s son, married her, a poor uneducated girl* and soon deserted her. It was a secret marriage, and he hated her and their child. It may be for this reason that she began to drink and lead a bad life.
”1 must, spoil his New Year's pleasure she thought, "t must expose him." With these words she left the house and started for Raveloc. She had to walk a long distance to get there. Molly could not move fast.
The snow was thick and her progress was very slow because the child was in her arms. She often had to stop to have a short rest. Soon it got quite dark.
Molly was not far fr om Silas Mamer’s cottage when weakness overcame her and she decided to sit down under a bush. "1 shan’t be able to reach the Red House and see him*" she thought. As she was very tired, she fall asleepS at once and did not hear the child's cry.
Then suddenly the child, a little girl of two noticed a bright thing on the snow. She wanted to catch it but she could not. It was the light which shone out through Mamer’s open door. The girl came up to the house and entered the cottage. Silas was in but he did not notice the child until she began to cry.
Silas soothed the girl. Then he took her in his arms and went to the door. When he went out of the house, he saw footmarks on the snow He followed them and soon came to the bush. There he saw a human figure
"Mammy, mammy," cried the child, but the woman was dead
