FIRE DETECTION AND ESCAPE
A good smoke detector – the ionization chamber and photoelectric types are
best – can give you more time to get out of your home before a fire really starts.
Many modern houses are equipped with them. If you have bedrooms at separate ends
of your home, you need two detectors. Test your detectors at least once a month.
Keep a fire extinguisher at hand and learn how to use it. But if you feel that
you cannot extinguish a fire by yourself, get outside and call the fire department.
Work out an escape plan beforehand and practice it. Windows, especially in
bedrooms, should open easily fr om the inside. At least one exterior door should be
easily accessible from bedrooms. When you are sleeping, shut bedroom doors to keep
smoke and flames out of bedrooms.
In case of fire, roll out of bed and crawl — don’t run. If your clothes catches
fire, do not run. Stop wh ere you are, drop to the ground, cover your face with your
hands, and roll over and over to smother the flames.
